Burma’s trunk is packed for Monarto Safari Park!

In what is sure to be an incredible journey, Asian Elephant, Burma, is due to arrive at Monarto Safari Park next week!

The first arrival of South Australia’s new Asian Elephant herd will be transferred from Auckland Zoo on Tuesday 12 November, and will immediately commence a standard 30-day quarantine period at Monarto Safari Park.

Burma’s arrival is incredibly exciting for Zoos SA, and for South Australia. We are thrilled to welcome her to her forever home, where she is the first of five Asian Elephants who will form a herd by the end of 2025.

We know how invested the community is in Burma’s arrival and we will provide an update once she has had a chance to settle in. While we appreciate that this is exciting news for South Australians, our priority needs to be on Burma’s welfare during her travel. Everyone involved in Burma’s transfer has a job to do, and we need to remain focused on doing that and getting Burma to her new home, safe and sound and as quickly as possible.

As is a standard requirement for all international zoo-to-zoo animal transfers, Burma will be in quarantine at Monarto Safari Park for her first month where she’ll have the support, familiar company and expert care of her elephant keepers who are making the trip with her from Auckland.

Media are invited to attend a press conference next Wednesday for an update on Burma’s journey. Any additional requests for interview cannot be facilitated at this time, as the teams at Monarto Safari Park and Auckland Zoo focus on Burma and her safe journey across the ditch!

We appreciate the media and the public working alongside us to make sure Burma’s transfer to Monarto Safari Park runs as smoothly as possible.
