Having completed her 30-day quarantine period earlier this month, Burma continues to explore and settle into her new habitat at Monarto Safari Park – complete with waterhole!
Burma is delighting staff, volunteers, and visitors with her fun approach to keeping cool in the South Australian summer, with trunk-fulls of water and plenty of splashing around.
A highlight of her new home for Burma (and Monarto Safari Park visitors!) is the drinker she has access to. This is an in-ground, self-filling water enrichment device that allows Burma to draw cool water out of the ground using her trunk – which often ends up being thrown over her back, or sometimes if she’s feeling cheeky, in the direction of her keepers!
Burma can hold up to eight litres of water in her trunk, and visitors will often see her throw water over herself followed by a dusting of sand on her back, to reflect the sun and keep her nice and cool.
Now quite comfortable in her new forever home after her move from Auckland Zoo, Burma is out daily on the area known as the cloverleaf, which is over three acres within the 12-hectare elephant habitat developed at Monarto Safari Park.
Complete with waterhole, varied terrain and shade, the area has been specially designed by elephant keepers and welfare experts, and keepers are seeing Burma’s confidence and familiarity with her surrounds growing daily.
Meanwhile, planning continues to bring the next member of the new Monarto Safari Park herd to join Burma; Permai will travel from Perth Zoo to Monarto in late January.
Monarto Safari Park visitors can see Burma on habitat from the Zu-loop bus or park walking trails, accessible with pre-booked general admission tickets.
As we enter into peak visitor season, non-members are encouraged to pre-book their date specific tickets, either online or through the Zoos SA bookings team to ensure they don’t miss out!
Zoos SA members are not required to book, and will be able to enter the park on any day of their choosing by presenting your valid membership card and photo ID.
