Zoos South Australia is excited to share that Asian elephant, Permai, has begun her journey from Perth Zoo across the Nullarbor to her new home at Monarto Safari Park!
After more than a year of planning and crate training, everything came together this morning and Permai happily walked into her crate before being craned onto a truck and departing her long-time home at Perth Zoo. She was happily munching on watermelon as she was moved out of her habitat to commence her journey to her new forever home at Monarto Safari Park.
Permai’s journey has been meticulously planned by expert staff at Perth Zoo and Monarto Safari Park. She is travelling in a custom-built transport crate which is air-conditioned, fully insulated, and has a temperature gauge and cameras that will be constantly monitored by the team travelling with her. The crate also holds up to 1000 litres of water and plenty of snacks.
On the road with Permai from Perth Zoo is a team of veterinarians and expert keeping staff who will be closely monitoring her throughout the entire journey, which we expect will take up to two days.
While we’ll do our best to keep you updated, our sole focus is on getting Permai to Monarto Safari Park safely. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we provide news as we have it, taking into account Permai’s needs as well as patchy reception across the Nullarbor!
Make sure you’re following us on social media to stay across updates on Permai’s journey – we’re so excited for you to meet her soon!
