How your ticket helps our conservation efforts
Ring-tailed Lemurs are classified as endangered with habitat loss and poaching the biggest threat to the wild population. Their habitat is already restricted in southern Madagascar and continues to diminish due to annual burning practices that help create new pasture land for livestock, over-grazing by livestock and the felling of trees for charcoal production.
Ring-tailed Lemurs can be found in six national parks and three reserves where they are protected. They are also hunted for meat and kept as pets, although it’s illegal to remove animals from the wild for this purpose.
And, like the lemurs, the Aldabra Giant and Radiated Tortoises are also threatened with extinction due to habitat fragmentation, the illegal pet trade and hunting for meat.
By purchasing a ticket to Land of the Lemurs, you are not only supporting the incredible species in our care, you’re also helping us raise awareness and valuable funds to safeguard their wild cousins. Part of the income generated from our Animal Experiences contributes to the work Zoos SA does in support of a wide number of conservation programs both within and beyond our gates.
