Join us in celebrating our closest cousin in the animal kingdom, our cheeky chimps!

World Chimpanzee Day is a celebration of our closest living relatives and an opportunity to raise awareness about the vital need for worldwide participation in their protection and conservation. July 14 marks the very day in 1960 when Dr. Jane Goodall first stepped foot in what is now Gombe Stream National Park, to study wild chimpanzees. Through her groundbreaking research, Dr. Goodall called attention to this remarkable species and our responsibility to protect them.

Chimpanzees are highly endangered with as little as 350,000 remaining in the wild. The primary threats they face are habitat loss due to logging, mining, palm oil plantations and population growth, disease and illegal wildlife trade.

As a conservation charity, we work to help save chimps from extinction through involvement in international breeding programs and by supporting the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Jane Goodall Institute of Australia.

We’re excited to say it’s easy for you to make a positive impact too – You can help support primate conservation in the wild simply by recycling your old mobile phones!

Working with PhoneCycle, we’ll recycle or refurbish your old phones, eliminating the need for extraction of new raw materials (often mined in areas of chimpanzee habitat) and providing phones to those who can’t afford them. All funds raised directly support on-ground conservation work at the Tacugama Sanctuary in Sierra Leone and the many youth and conservation programs of the Jane Goodall Institute of Australia.

Simply drop your old mobile phones into the collection box at the Chimp Platform by the signage across from the night enclosure on Sunday 14 July. Or you can make a donation at the Chimp Platform during our Chimpanzee Keeper presentation.

So join us in celebrating World Chimpanzee Day at Monarto Safari Park, visit our troop of magnificent chimps and help us ensure these inquisitive creatures stay a swing ahead of extinction!
